Car Creation Tutorials

guardian2010

Hi Guys,

I've done some searching, but have not been able to find any actual car creation tutorials, only skinning.

I'm a 3D modeler, and have created several 3D car models that I wish to
import into a game.

I have been told that Rfactor is very easy to modify, would it be fairly
easy to import my car models into the game using a SDK or 1st/3rd party
tools?

You can get the tools from here http://www.rfactor.net/developers/ You will need the 'rFactor mod development tool pack' and the 'rFactor Max Plugins' for your version of Max.
You use the tools and help files from version 2, but get version 1 too because it has max samples in it which give examples of how the shaders are used.

Here are some tutorials that have helped me out a lot.

But most of what's learnt is from trial and error, it's always been hard to find the right info that covers exactly what you want to know, most of it is scattered all over the internet.

Cheers

do you _have_ to use max?

I avoid max because its too expensive, and I don't want to re-learn another tool.

I use Blender3D which can export to 3ds... but obviously max plugins won't work.

I don't actually own the game yet, I'm just figuring out if its easy to mod, as this would be my only interest, I'm specifically looking for games that I can start putting my cars into.

I use Blender too, at the moment you have to use a 3rd party app to convert the 3ds into gmt. I use 3dSimEd http://www.sim-garage.co.uk/ , but still grab the ISI tools, lots of info in there that will help you.
3dSimEd is a must have for this sort of work, no matter what method you use it is one of the handiest tools around for this sort of thing. You can get a 20 day demo of it, open up a default ISI car with it like the Hammer for example and look through the materials and see how the shaders are set up.

Also check this thread out. https://community.racesimcentral.net/showthread.php/120-Development-Tools-for-Blender

I have had the urge to make a tutorial for blender but I honestly thought no one used it to make models for rFactor, so I never bothered because I only see 3dMax mentioned, never Blender. There are a few little tricks you need to do to get everything to work out right. I will see if I can get some time together to put one together.

Thanks millions for that mianiak, Like I said, I'm keen because this game looks awesome, but I just don't want to spend the money if I can't mod it..

I'm very disappointed with the Need For Speed series as they are making it harder and harder to mod their games.
