dds and alpha channel

I am trying to change the mask on a dds texture file (dxt5) using paint shop 14 with nvidia plugin. I delete the previous mask, load the new one, save it as alpha channel and then try to save the file as dds in dxt5. The problem is that somehow the mask gets merged into the backround... that way when i load the new file the alpha is correct but the backround looks like blanked out and merged with the mask.. could anyone please elaborate on how to do it the right way?
 
You are doing it the right way. That is how a properly applied mask looks. Paint shop interprets the mask as translucency, rFactor interprets the mask as reflectivity.

To re-edit the mask you may need to add the mask layer again and apply it. Not sure as I don't use Paint Shop.
