DIY Pedal Springs

Robtroll

Hi everyone :)

I'd like to start building my own set of load-cell pedals soon and I have everything pretty much figured out apart from the springs.

I can't for the life of me find any details of the springs that are used in such pedals and looking at spring manufacturers websites gives me no closer of a hint to what I should be looking for.

Can anyone enlighten me on what I need to look for? Or even exactly what I need?

I massively appreciate any help in advance! ;)

Thank you!

I used regular compression springs to build mine. As far as wire diameter I basically went trial and error.

Cool. Thanks for the reply.

Any idea what diameter and length you went with in the end?

I understand it will be down to preference, but it will give me a starting point :)

You could also use RC Car shock absorbers, you can adjust feel with different oil etc.

More than I have managed to apply so far ;)
If you want something heavier duty then Mountain Bikes have 120mm shocks or thereabouts

Okay, you have me interested. Have you got any pictures of them mounted? Is there anything in particular I should be looking for?

RC cars dampers will do the job, Fanatec uses something like that, I've exchange it to one of somewhat stronger RC damper. They're not expensive too, you can track it down on Ebay for about 30$ a pair.

Thanks Prodigy.

So the way i'm imagining it, is that you have a bar that is a little off from the loadcell and so when you press the pedal you feel the shock first before hitting the loadcell and activating it? Is that right or is it always resting on the loadcell?

Thanks for the advice Adrian.

I've actually got a checkout on a spring manufacturers website full of different types of springs ready to go. I was wondering if there was a certain type that felt better or even just general information on what to look for.

By the way, this is mainly for the accelerator. For the brake, it was just going to be a short spring, followed by some polyurethane springs much like Protosimtechs pedals, up until the RC shocks were mentioned above. So now I'm looking at both options to see which would work best both in use and in fabrication/building. And as i'm still pretty new to sim racing, i'm leaving the clutch for another time.

I'm also looking at cost effectiveness. I was going to go for some CSR Elites as I can't quite stretch to CSP's, but I figured that if I could build some loadcell based pedals cheaply, that I may as well go for that instead. Adding to that, I won't have to wait for them to be in stock.
