Game crashes!

T J Johansen

I bought myself a new computer recently, with gaming in mind. Not the hottest act out there, but according to the seller good enough for driving rFactor and GPL. I bought the game from one of the eBay stores which sells all kind of games, and according to the cover and booklet is the 1.255 version. Unfortunately the game has crashed ever since day one. Funny thing is that it doesn't matter which track I'm on, original or add-on. Some cars are worse than others, but again it doesn't matter if it is original or add-on.

I have asked around on a couple of other forums, I but suppose you might have the best knowledge about tech problenms regarding this. Anyway, this is a couple of the threads I've started on the subject:

Hope you might be able to help, as I really enjoy rFactor (up until the moment it crashes). Great graphics, and wonderful add-ons.

Rich Dozer@ racedepartment thread mentions the power supply, did you check if your's is powerfull enough?

it sure sounds like a hardware issue rather then rfactor.

i dunno tbh, i'm not very technical in this department.
I would have taken a more powerfull powersupply from a friend or whatever and put it in my own pc, test it to see what happens. That seems to be the most quick and effective way.

googled it: http://www.techrepublic.com/article/power-supply-troubleshooting-with-a-multimeter/1056686
Looking at the different search results and comments on websites powersupply issues are actualy very common and one of the main causes for failure in hardware.

Try disconnecting stuff you don't need. Like extra cards, floppy, cdrom, extra HDs. I had a problem with rF crashing and after thinking about it I remembered that I had added a third disk about the time it started crashing. So I removed unneeded hardware and the crashing went away. So I figured the PSU was overloaded with the extra disk. I got a now PSU and rF stopped crashing.

I haven't read the other posts but if by "crash" you mean it locks up (sometimes with the sound still looping), this is most commonly graphic card cooling issues. If you haven't tested for this yet, perhaps try taking the cover off the machine and aiming a house fan at the inside and see if the lock up takes longer or goes away (test using the same track/vehicle/number of AI). If so, then you might try a different video card to see if that solves the problem. I'd do this before swapping out a PSU in the process of elimination.

This is what I posted on another forum:

While playing I suddenly get a black screen. In most cases the computer then promptly re-starts, but in some cases it just sits there with the black screen. Then I have no other option but to re-start the PC myself. No ctrl alt del or any other input will do anything. As for time, whenever! I have driven at tracks for an hour or so before this happens, but then again it can be within the first five minutes. I could then re- start it and play for an hour, two hours, or ten min. You just never knew!

Some tracks appeared to be worse than others. Essington is one. I never made it around the track once before it crashed. In the worst scenario I got as far as selecting first gear in the pit, and clonk, it crashed. Snetterton is one track where I can't remember ever having a problem. It could also seem as though some cars were more troublesome than other. The original F1 BMW Sauber and the 1993 F1 add-on comes to mind.

I eventually re- installed the game without any add- ons, but to no avail. I did however make it around Essington, although on my second lap it crashed again. I had a friend try it out on Saturday just to show him, and he made it around the Monza oval four times in the F1 BMW before all went pear shaped again.

I did try out the possibility using a fan next to the cabinet with the door off. It took a while for it to crash, but then again it happens at random anyway!

If for restarts you mean the PC reboots by itself, PSU can be the guilty.

Here a PSU calculator, dont know how much accurate, but googling you can find other PSU calculator tools, so to compare the result

[EDIT] Instead, if for "restarts" you mean the black screen disappears, heat can be the issue, as Bee said.
Something close happened to me months ago with my old ATI X1950 graphics card, in my case heat was not the guilty, but the VRAM.

I checked it with the tool here

http://majorgeeks.com/Video_Memory_Stress_Test__d5896.html

and it reported a lot of errors (months before, with the same card, the test ran pefect, no errors at all)

I changed the graphics card, and the issue disappeared :)
