Lots of little objects or one big object?

A while ago I learned that it's better to use a single material and a texture atlas than is is to have lots of small ones. Now I'm wondering if it's the same with objects. If a track has many trees, all in a small area, is it a good idea to combine them or should they be in small groups?
 
I don't know about performance but for sure rF has some number of objects limitations (about 2000 or so)
Another thing you have consider that night lighting is projected with maximum limit 4 lights per single object.
Also there maybe issues with shadows (specially dynamic ones) if objects is too big or too complicated

Thanks. That's what I thought would be the case, but after being surprised about textures I thought I'd double check.
