Need to Paint certain sections of Walls and Guardrails

I need to paint certain sections of walls and guardrails. When I open up the .mas file then the .dds file, all the walls and guardrails are based on one .dds file.

So when I change the color of the .dds file for the wall or guardrail to red, all the track's entire wall and guardrails change to red. But I only want certain pieces of the walls and guardrails to be red.

Is this possible?
 
Yes, it is possible. What programs are you using to edit?
Do you have access to the original resources used to create the GMT?
I'm going to guess no. Generally, you'll need to change the material name as reference by the mesh and change the texture referenced by the material. Anything else will cause conflicts on other objects, as you've already experienced.
