rFactor Dedicated Server crashes

10speed

Hi there, hope you can help ...
Our Dedicated Server sometimes crashes when loading the next track. There is no description given why, the LOG doesn't say anything special either. The rfactor installation is about 50 GB with lots of different vehicle classes and more than 500 track variations. I know that is huge but we don't use everything at all times of course. :) Is there perhaps a limit with rfactor-dedicated only allowing a certain number of tracks and vehicles installed? The dedicated server instances are running on Windows Server 2012 with less than 10% CPU and RAM usage altogether most of the time. We set the dedicated server to Windows XP compatibily mode (SP3) but that didn't help.

Daniel:

If you would like to see what crashed the rF instance and you have remote desktop access, You can view the errors
in the server event viewer.

Not knowing what operating system your dedicated is running, I can only guess it is either server 2003 or Server 2008.

To view the events in the server log you do the below.

Open your control panel, click on the Administrative Tools icon, look for the Events viewer icon. Click on events, then open the application folder.

In there, you will see if any, a red error message.
You can then click it open and you will be able to see what the error was that shut down your server.

Hope this helps

Dave

Thanks for your response Dave.
The OS is Windows Server 2012. Still everything where it used to be with prior versions, but you get the rubbish Windows 8 UI. :D

Event viewer has stored various errors:

So there is an error within "rFactor Dedicated.exe" and modules "ntdll.dll", "msvcrt.dll" and "rFactor Dedicated.exe", exception code is 0xc0000005 . There is not much I could find out about this exception, but I'll try to switch off DEP and SEHOP based on the info given here: http://www.win2012workstation.com/tag/0xc0000005/

According to wikipedia DEP "(Data Execution Prevention (DEP)) is a security feature [...] and is intended to prevent an application or service from executing code from a non-executable memory region." As the server crashes randomly when switching to the next track, maybe there are regions in computer memory which are marked as non-executable and rfactor dedicated still wants to use them when the next track is loaded?

Damn, where is a crystal ball when you need one? :(

I finally downloaded the new 1255c rFactor-version which was released for those people who had problems using trymedia with Windows 8. It also comes with a new dedicated server.exe that solved the problem. That's what I'm praying for at least because after 50times next track and random "/callvote event" commands the dedicated server is still running. :D
Thanks for your support Dave, this thread might help other users facing the same problem.
