Texturing fake shadows

Vinceton

I'm completely new(and late) to sim racing and rfactor. Just bought rFactor a few weeks ago.

Ok now to the point. I want to go from this:

To this:

As you can see, it's really only a sketchup painted in photoshop. But I think I'm going to struggle to translate my 2d skill over into 3d.

Problem 1. I'm horrible with 3dsmax. I'm an expert in Maya, however. But I don't have that (I switched over to 2d illustration years ago) . Even if I did, there's probably no gMotor plugins for it.

Problem 2. How on earth would I lay out all those shadows? UV sets/channels I'm guessing. Vertex painting is out of the question, since it would need a tonne of triangles (and it would still lack detail). But in the case of having a lot of texture maps, how would that affect the performance?

Erm... I think I'm way over my head here.

Oh and if you're wondering why my car has the cockpit deleted. Well, it's because my driving view kind of looks like this:

Except slightly smaller with 1x50" screen, and a whole lot dodgier since mine's just made out of cheap wood.
Only rfactor could do this with the utmost ease. Edit a text file, and it's good to go. So robust, this sim is. YEAH BABY!!!
