A few newbie questions

65GTO

Hi all,

First off, please excuse me if anything I'm asking here has already been discussed elsewhere or if I should post each point separately.

I've been playing Rfactor for a few months now after playing GPL for a few years and I'm a big fan. However, there are a few issues which are a real pain in the......proverbial.

So, in no particular order:

1) Loading cars and tracks. Some car mods don't load and some track mods don't load (rfactor crashes when things don't load). Some cars have never loaded, but now do, and likewise for the tracks. In addition some tracks will only load with certain mods...although I'd go as far to say that actually only a VERY small percentage of the tracks I've added have ever worked. Oh and some tracks used to load, but now they don't.....

2) Steering. Some mods work fine, but with others as soon as you turn right or left to leave the garage you're in, the wheel heaves itself all the way to full lock. I've discovered that altering the force feedback from a plus to minus figure (or vice versa) solves this, but is there a way to have all car's steering working the same way without having to go and alter the feedback figure?

3) Scenery. Very suddenly about a month ago, the scenery on almost all of the tracks (......at least the ones that load) went haywire. Some are worse than others. At worst the scenery is 'moving' and all blurred like some sort of acid trip and this is proving to be something of a distraction whilst racing!

There are probably a few more things I'd like to sort out, but those are the biggies. If anyone out there can help or point me in the right direction I'd be sincerely grateful :)

Thanks in advance,

Andy

Just install rfactor lite into a seperate folder and check if its working (no harm done you can use as many "installs" into different folders without reactivation) - so you have an "unused" working base - now copy your tracks into location folder one by one and try them out, so you see which track causes your problem. (I thinkone of your tracks changed some of the main files in the gamedata\locations). Same for your mods. You can even make different installs for categories like: GT Cars, Openwheelers, Test,....
You can use the same location folder for all installs by linking to the folder in the config.ini file : ie - TracksDir=E\:GAMEDATA\LOCATIONS\

Thanks Hazi, appreciate that. You'll have to excuse my very basic understanding of files and folders and all that.... But I think I understand. Where do I get rfactor lite? I'm going to get on this right away :)

Oh dear, that didn't go very well at all....

I found rfactor lite and downloaded it, but when it had finished I couldn't see rfactor lite anywhere on the desktop. I gave up and just launched rfactor - only to find that my 'old' rfactor with all the mods and tracks had gone and been replaced by rfactor with just one car and one track!

Please help :(

Hi everyone, I still can't find my 'old' install with all the tracks and cars.

PLEASE, even if you don't know how to help with this specific problem, could you point me towards an rfactor forum where there may be more people who might be able to help?

Thanks.

Hello 65gto,

I think most people have switched their attention to rFactor2, other wise you will be swamped with willing people trying to help.

I need some back ground information about your computer first,
What operating system are you using? windows xp, windows vista, windows 7, 32 or 64 bit.
What graphics card are you using ?

If I take a wild guess, your using Windows 7, which means all the tracks and mods you downloaded are in a hidden directory.
I'm not using Windows 7 so i dont rememder the exact location where windows hides it.

1. Some where on Windows 7 they give you file/folder options and you can select show hidden files.
2. Go to C:/ drive and look for something like documents and settings.
3. You should see a folder with your user name (example 65gto)

This is the part where it gets hazi and i cant remember. Someone with Windows 7 should be able to correct me, but your looking something called applications data, virtual store, program files.

All your mods, tracks, player settings etc are there some where. Sorry I cant be more specific as i prefer to use Windows XP.

Sorry to hear that: But look under c:\programfiles\rfactor. btw which OS ar you on: Windows 7 or XP ....
One other tip just open your windows explorer and use the search function to look for: locations, then search for userdata, then for *.rfm. Sure you will find the location of your "old" files. Otherwise reinstall your tracks one by one from your downloaded files into rflite and do so with your downloaded mods.
(To find your location just click right on your rf icon on desktop and look under settings where the link points to.)

Thanks guys. I'm running Win7 with am ATI graphics card (...not sure which one). I can't follow the instructions you've kindly given me until tomorrow, but I will try to find the 'old' install and let you know how I get on - and then try to figure out what was upsetting the original install.

Is rfactor2 out yet? Perhaps I should just go for that instead?

Hello 65GTO,

rFactor2 isn't out yet, they are only BETA testing it.
Will check back tomorrow :)

When I look under c:\programmefiles\rfactor I can see a window full of all the tracks and mods on my 'old' install. How do I get a shortcut to this from the desktop?

Mind you, that will just get me back to where I was 2 weeks ago - with a bug-laden install.

How do I separate my original install and the 'lite' version on the desktop?

Also...

If I can do this, how do I load the tracks/mods one-by-one? When I downloaded I just clicked 'on click install' and it did the rest itself.

Seriously out of my depth here with all this...... :/

I've just tried to rename the file with all the old game data in it and created a shortcut to the desktop, but when I click on this it doesn't load the 'old' game - just opens the folder again...

Hello 65GTO,

1. Go back to the c://program files/rfactor folder.
2. Look for for an orange and black icon labelled RFACTOR, using your right mouse button click on it. Windows should open a small list of options.
3. Click on CREATE SHORTCUT. I think it should give you the option to create a new shortcut on the desktop.

If that works, yes you should be back to where you were before you tried to install rfactor light. Hopefully this time it will give you an error message so we can work out the problem.

Thanks Mangoletsi (as in Knutsford Alfa Romeo by any chance??)

I followed your advice above, but when I clicked on the rfactor icon on my desktop it opened the 'new' (bare) install :(

Not related to Knutsford :)

I'm kind of stuck now because I dont use Windows 7, all I can suggest is to copy the whole rfactor folder from c://program files/ to the desktop to bypass the Windows 7 security setings. Then make a new short cut to that instead.
Hoping a Windows 7 user will know more.

Mango

Thanks Mango'

Sadly I'm out of my depth in terms of copying folders and so on. Fed up now so might have to sack rfactor and settle for GT5 or something like that..... :(

Sorry, I should of explained better.

1. go to c://program files/ and find the rfactor folder.
2. Use the right mouse button and click on the rfactor folder.
(It should open a little menu list)
3. click on copy with your left mouse button.
(close the folder view so your on the desktop)
4. Move the mouse into a blank part of the desktop and press the right mouse button.
(It should open a little menu list)
5. Use the left mouse button and press paste.

You should now have an rfactor folder with all your mods and tracks on your desktop. If you open it and double click on the rfactor program, hopefully it will start and all your mods will be inside.

Hi Mango'

I followed your instructions and everything worked except when I click on the rfactor program in the new folder on the desktop, the rectangular rfactor 'opening' starts up.......and then closes on its own.

Can't express how much I wish I'd left the thing alone in the first place and just suffered all the bugs. Lesson learned :(

Hmm, ok didnt expect that.

I think it can only be 1 of 2 things causing that problem.

1st. My instinct is saying your player profile is trying to load something, but cant find it and crashes.
FIX = open the UserData folder in the rfactor folder, drag your player named folder out of the rfactor folder onto the desktop. Start rfactor which should ask you to create a new player profile. exit rfactor and put your player folder back in. Then start rfactor again, and switch back to your player profile whilst in the game.

2nd. Unlikely, but you may need to run config from the start/all programs/rfactor/config.

I found the folder named after me and dragged it onto the desktop. I then opened rfactor from the file i added to the desktop earlier, but the same thing happened - it seemed to think about opening but didn't.

I'll try the config thing but I don't really understand it.

I ound the rfactor config bit, opened it and saw a small window. There was an 'ok' button in the bottom right corner which I clicked but the windonw closed and nothing else happened. Is this right?

Hello,

I'm going to have to install Windows 7 on one of my computers, to replicate whats going on as Windows XP doesn't suffer from these issues. It's all to do with how Wndows 7 protects the programs in C drive.
It'll take me a few hours, I'll probably answer you on Wednesday.

Thanks so much for your help Mango'

Out of desparation I clicked on something I found on my desktop called 'shortcut to rfactor' .....and it turned out to be my 'old' install with all the mods and tracks!!

So I suppose now that I can access this I'm back to square one and need to remove the tracks and mods which don't work, although as I mentioned originally the list of mods and tracks which don't work is changing all the time.

good to hear its back up and running.

Usually when a car or track doesnt work, is because something is missing like a shape or a texture or has a wrong file link. changing display settings from full to high, medium or low will be a tell tale sign. It should also say what the file is called whats missing when rfactor crashes because it cant find it.

Hi Mango,

Interesting. When it crashes it's usually seconds after I select a track and all I get is a 'beep' before the loading bar begins to fill. I don't usually get a message emplaining what's missing.

However..... occasionally the loading bar is half full before I get a message about textures missing. All I do it hit 'enter' and the bar continues to fill and the track works with no discernable problems!

I take it that now I need to add tracks on-by-one to rfactor lite? How should I do this?

Thanks again,
Andy

When you hear the 'beep', does rF minimize to the desktop so you can see the error message? If not, hit Ctrl+Esc to force it to minimize. Usually it will be errors for missing textures and stuff like that. It is hard to track down these problems sometimes. You can turn on the trace log and get more hints on what you are missing too. I would follow your own advice and load a new fresh rF Lite install and add your tracks one at a time. Also, be sure to run rFactor as admin. Just right click on your rFactor shortcut and select properties. Then click the compatibility tab and then put a check in the run as admin box. The other option is to just disable UAC. To do that just click start, type UAC in the search box, then hit enter. Then drag the bar to the bottom and hit ok. rFactor likes to store settings (config.ini and UserData) in the Program Files directory which is off limits to non-admins. In XP most people ran on admin accounts so this wasn't a problem. On Vista/Win7/Win8 Microsoft forces all users (even admin accounts) to run without admin rights. This is what UAC is all about. It was a way to combat viruses but it creates a lot of confusion on older games.

I think Noel is better experienced to help you better then me 65GTO, as he uses Windows 7 and I use XP.
I also dont know much about this rFactor lite, as I use the full version. If there are any specific tracks you desperately want to drive on but wont load, post a link to were you downloaded it, and let me know the circuit detail and texture detail setting. I wil try and download it and work out why it wont load for you.

I hope everything goes well for you now
:)

Hi Noel, hi Mango'

Thanks for your help. Sadly I have a much bigger problem right now in that I bought a Fanatec Carrera wheel..................................................but rfactor can't 'see' the brake and clutch and the throttle doesn't work correctly!

I've posted something in the technical section, but until I can get them to work I can't really progress with getting the tracks and mods to run properly.

I'm not going to give up, by man is this all a giant pain in the proverbial!!! :)
