rF and rF2 Triple Screen Performance with GTX 680 SLI

otta56

Some tests with a new GTX680 SLI subsystem reveals that a 2 GB frame buffer is not enough for 32x CSSA combined with 8x SS Transparency Supersampling in rF2. At Spa with 25 AI, the average frame buffer use is 2.4 GB (as tested with a 3GB GTX580 SLI subsystem), multiview on, no HDR, shadows at medium. Even at these settings, aliasing artifacts are clearly visible at 6004X1200.

Because of the constant swapping out of textures from main to graphics memory stuttering is very pronounced whenever there are large texture changes in scenery or AI cars pass.

The GTX680 does much better in rf1 where AA can be increased to 32x S (2x2 SS + 8x MS) with transparency Supersampling at 2x SGSSAA. There are no aliasing artifacts at this level. The maximum memory used was just under 2 GB at Targa Florio with 15 AI and all settings at max including shadows. Frame rates were steady at 60 throughout most of the course, occasionally dipping to 52.

It seems likely that rF2 will require an SLI subsystem with at least 4 GB of frame buffer per GPU to accommodate a resolution of 5760x1200 with multiview, HDR and all in game settings at maximum on longer courses.

The attached image shows the GTX680 SLI subsystem performance at Targa Florio. Note the high GPU clocks. rF1 seems capable of using all available GPU power but it finally allows 60 fps game play with all graphics options on at supersampling AA levels. In fact it is so good, I have started playing rF1 in preference to rF2 again.

Nvidia systems used for this test were:

MSI Lightning Xtreme GTX580 3GB SLI (834 MHz core)
Galaxy GTX680 SOC 2GB SLI (1202 MHz core)

Just ordered a couple of Zotac 4GB GTX 680's and some CSQ waterblocks from EK.... will let you know if I get any different next weekend after fitting :)

I have a pair of 580 GTX 3GB in Surround currently and have also noted the 2.4GB mem usage around some tracks with all the details pumped up and Multiview on.

Mrpix,

Brill I'm also on 2gtx580's 3gb versions

Let me know how the 680's 4gb compare

Cheers

Well, I have them installed now, just gotta test them on rF2 when I get a few spare hours.... I'll try otta56's settings and see how the VRAM fills up.

I have benched them with 3DMark 11 and Heaven and there is an improvement in scores, but it means diddly if I can't see an improvement in production games.

3DMark'11:
580 3GB SLI: P11650, X4681
680 4GB SLI: P13681, X6134

Heaven:
Render: direct3d11
Mode: 1920x1200 8xAA fullscreen
Shaders: high
Textures: high
Filter: trilinear
Anisotropy: 16x
Occlusion: enabled
Refraction: enabled
Volumetric: enabled
Tessellation: extreme

580 3GB SLI: FPS: 73.0, Scores: 1838, Min FPS: 12.4, Max FPS: 180.3
680 4GB SLI: FPS: 83.3, Scores: 2098, Min FPS: 24.7, Max FPS: 207.9

I have some benches I did for rF2 somewhere on the 580's a while back at the start of Build 90 so I'll see if I can dig them up for comparison.

have you done any more testing yet? I just got ivy bridge and an extra 6970 to boost performance in all the sims i play (in triple screens) and my frame rates are pretty poor in terms of scaling. I'm starting to worry that the biggest issues we all have is bandwidth limits over pci-e and triple screens.

*EDIT* Scratch that post. I just downloaded "AMD Catalyst Application Profiles" and i think it's solved my performance issues.

Please resume GTX 680 goodness as and when needed :)
