Wing Development in Formula 1, 1968-1971

Interesting video, as the title says. Hopefully this video can spark some ideas into ISI and/or modders mind as well. Happy watching! :)

Was actually talking to a former F1 team founder/owners son yesterday attempting to license some of those shown. Really hoping that one pans out as it's a terrific period team and those cars in particular should add a lot of possible years of F1 to spec leagues.

Thats really good news, thank you Tim!
I really dont get this situation with licencing, I would beleive having your companys name in a so popular sim, would be good and free advertising...

Advertising? Advertising for what? Yeah, I think the guys who own Matra will be really happy that the Matra name is getting out there! That'll really boost sales of, uh, well...Do you see what I'm getting at? ;)

The second point is, imagine you hold the copyright to something, like a car you designed back in the 1960's. Do you think everyone should always get to use your designs for whatever they want, for FREE? Regardless if you personally disagree, most of the modern world agrees on some form of copyright law, which leads to licensing.

Is it annoying and frustrating? You bet yer ass it is. I work in the industry too and the work required to get a track or a car is something I would never want to do. And not being able to implement something because they say you can't get it? Super frustrating. And exclusive agreements? Good job, Porsche.

I don't really like licensing, but it's necessary. On that note, Go Tim, Go!! Good luck on these vintage deals, this is by far my favorite content!

I cannot disagree with your points but the whole thing is close to ridiculous. If you were lets say Shell or Repsol isnt it free advertising to have your name in a sim's 60s track?

Most of the teams no longer have any associated with the sponsors, and infact for some they have negative feeling towards them (sponsors do switch teams). So really a team that was sponsored by a company may have NO interest in freely advertising for that company. The company might love it, but they don't own the car. Unfortunately licensing makes perfect sense.

A couple of oil companies have been talking to me, so some of those fake companies may be replaced eventually.

This is really good film footage! The high suspension mounted wing era was very short and dangerous lasting only from about mid 1968 to the end of first practice Monaco 1969. My tally of GP's began just after high wings were banned. My favourite car of the high wing era was the BRM P139 with those big double suspension mounted orange wings in addition to nose wings! There are a few glimpses in the footage. I can only imagine the view from the back of the grid looking forward at the forest of wings and wings supports dancing around above the cars as they maneuver below at track surface! To race these in rfactor2 would be cool!

There is a question here about free advertising vs. licencing fees. While you are correct that companies liked and still do like lots of free advertising they are also presented with the dilema of brand management and brand protection. In order to maintain a brand which is a symbol of a company and its principles you do have to exercise some control on how it is used. If it is misused the damage can be worse than the value of the advertising. So over the years, brand management has shifted to get a better balance between control and benefit. If you lose control of a brand its value can quickly diminish.

So companies want awareness, but they want the awareness they want you have vs. having it totally random. Its the same for yourself when you manage your own personal reputation, through your actions and words.

What licencing allows a company to do is be selective about how its brand is used while still allowing others to use it to mutual benefit. It is also a mechanism that means you get access to things like the actual colours and artwork(as an example) for the brand or product designs so it is presented correctly, and used correctly to the benefit of both parties.

Some brands are so valuable that over and above the value of any advertising, the brand can actually be worth more to the entity that wants to use it, than the value of the exposure to the brand. In that case the brand wants to extract the maximum value from the equity they have invested, in developing the brand. Some brands are so valuable that companies can make almost as much from licencing as they do from selling their products!, so great is the desire of others to have their product associated with the brand of higher value!

I think what irks people is when brands don't allow any licencing, or they perceive the value of their brand to be greater than it is!
That is, however, a part of modern commercialism!

So licencing can have both a good and bad side depending on how it is approached.

The fact that ISI is trying to gather as many strategic and appropriate licences as they can is definitely to our benefit in improving the simulator's technical or historic accuracy!

cheers

Stephen

I can't see it going to other direction. rFactor is the best quality simulator out there, so good things should happen to ISI.

Edit: Great vid! It seems me playing rFactor2

And in the end Stephen, ISI could charge brands (Shell, Goodyear, Stella Artois etc) to have the proper names and signs into the sim and with that money buy expensive licence from Ferrari, cause at the end, all values are bought and sold with the right price.
You can call it capitalism, I call it bad...recycling.
I fully understand your and hushypushy's points, but all that licencing thing has gone too far.
Next thing they wont allow our kids to sketch shells if they are yellow!

One would hope that ISI has sufficient reach to barter their terms?
But I do agree, sometimes it can appear silly! But unfortunately it is the reality!

I'm not sure what you mean? The person you're talking to about it dead, according to the first link you posted.

i mean, for example, you can contact silvio mosers' mechanic (Beat Schenker) for take a conctact to the Bellasi F1s' owner (I think -maybe- you can give free license for Bellasi F1 1970/1971)

Ah I understand. I have some content from that point already, thanks. :)

sorry taufikp if I get (again) off topic but i have to get it out of my chest.
I ve been a Ferrari fan almost since I remember myself.I got my matchbox 156 since junior school. After lots of years I hear that the yellow horse can be only on the "aprooved" by Ferrari, items. Since old man died long ago, (Enzo), seems to me I have some rights to this legacy. Many (lots of people, me and everybody) built that myth, didnt they? That applies to everybody really,Matra, Brabham, Honda, Lotus, Eagle, McLarren doesnt it. (Just p****d off here).

No problem Nik, this post is all about F1 development in classic era anyway. Can't wait for the new Formula classic contents from ISI ;)

Belgium GP, Spa, 1970 (the 4th GP in 1970). Now, I really am hoping ISI will give us an updated Spa and F1 cars like this video :D *fingers crossed*

wow, everybody is in there. Look at the finale, at La Source how close peoples feet are to spinning cars (suppose body parts were cheap those days).
